What is a School-Parent Compact?

  • A school-parent compact is an agreement that families, students, and teachers develop together. It explains how families and teachers work together to make sure all students reach grade level standards.

Effective Compacts:

  • link goals to the school improvement plan
  • focus on student learning skills
  • describe how teachers will help students develop skills using high-quality instruction
  • share strategies families can use at home
  • explain how teachers and families will communicate about student progress

Jointly Developed

The families, students, and staff of Selmer Elementary School developed this School-Parent Compact. Teachers suggested home learning strategies, families added ideas to make them more specific, and students told us what would help them learn. Meetings and events are held each year to review the compact and make changes based on student and family needs.

Families are welcome to contribute comments

and suggestions at any time.

If you would like to volunteer or participate in the classroom please contact our school office at 731-645-3131.

Parent Checklist to help your child be BEST prepared for learning each day and TNReady in the spring:

  • MOST IMPORTANTLY, help your child get ready to learn: ensure your child is going to school EVERY DAY, is ON TIME(school begins at 7:50), and well rested and ready to take on new challenges.
  • Meet with your child’s teacher if you have any questions or concerns and ask them how you can help support them at home.
  • Talk to your child and get feedback from them on their school work.
  • Challenge your  child by asking them to explain what they are learning when they are working on homework. Let them be the teacher and teach you.

Extended Learning Opportunities

-activities before/after school, during the summer, and during an extension of the school year to improve academic achievement

 - AR, STAR, common benchmarks, reading/math intervention, After-School Program, summer school, and Kinder-camp.

Teachers, Parents, Students - Together for Success

In the 3rd-5th Grade Classroom

The 3rd-5th classroom will work with students and families to support students’ success in reading and math. Some of our key connections with families will be:.

  • Offer 2 free Family Fun Nights per year
  • Messages for classroom and school updates
  • Our school web page and Facebook page includes upcoming school activities and events.

Selmer Elementary School Students

SES students joined staff and families to develop ideas about how they can succeed in school and reach for the stars in math and reading.

  • Talk with my family about new vocabulary words and what I am learning in Math.
  • Bring home our class parent letters and invitations for Family Fun Nights.

When teachers, students,  and families work together, we CAN achieve our goals!

    At Home

SES families joined staff to develop ideas

about how families can support students’

success in reading and math. Families may

have other ideas to add to this list.

  • Have fun with math by counting money, telling time, etc.

  • Try to attend Family Fun Nights or get information from my child’s teachers if

             we can’t attend.

  • Ask about their day and what they learned. Have them “teach” family members something new.

  • Play word games with the new

vocabulary words and find ways to use

             these words in family conversations.

  • Look for the school calendar each

month and check out the school’s
